“Sarah’s Oil”: A Story of Faith, Overflow, and the Miracles We Still Carry

In this season of shut downs, storms, shady politics, and shorter days we need all the light we can get. So, when the new movie, “Sarah’s Oil”, lightened my heart and reminded me that this too shall pass, I had to share. Inspired by the true story of Sarah Rector, a young Black girl who accidentally became one of the wealthiest children in America in the early 1900s, this movie reminds us what can happen when faith meets purpose.
Sarah Rector’s real-life story is powerful on its own. Born in 1902 to parents who had survived slavery, she inherited a piece of land that the world considered worthless. But when oil was discovered beneath it, everything changed. With that discovery came opportunity, challenges, people trying to control her future, and a spotlight she never asked for. Yet at the heart of it all was a child who believed—really believed—that her life had meaning.
The film takes that history and breathes new life into it. In Sarah’s Oil, the oil becomes more than a resource. It becomes a symbol of God’s provision, a reminder that abundance can show up in places we never expect. Sarah sees the oil as a sign: “My family’s story is not over. We are meant for more.”
Her conviction becomes contagious.
Her faith becomes the anchor.
Her courage becomes the spark.
Watching this film, I had a distant memory of Kevin Costner's “Field of Dreams.” Where that story used a cornfield to show how vision can open doors, Sarah’s Oil uses the heart of a young girl to show how faith can transform reality. This time, the miracle has familiar roots-- our cultural resilience, spirituality, and generational hope.
In a world that feels heavy with pressure, uncertainty, and emotional fatigue, Sarah’s Oil brings us back to the truth:
Miracles still happen for those who dare to believe.
Sarah’s story reminds us that faith is not passive. It moves. It acts. It multiplies—just like the oil. And in our own lives, when things feel scarce or overwhelming, this film whispers, “Don’t count yourself out. You still carry the power to change your story.”
Ultimately, Sarah’s Oil is more than a movie.
It’s a message.
A reminder.
A call to keep believing for overflow—in our families, our communities, and our own hearts.
Because when faith and purpose meet, something beautiful always comes.
In theatres now, "Sarah's Oil" is a great family time outing.
